What is a Cryptocurrency Scams?

Cryptocurrency scams exploit the complexity, irreversibility, and pseudonymity of blockchain transactions. They range from fake exchanges that steal deposits, to rug pulls where developers abandon a project, to 'seed phrase' theft that drains entire wallets. Unlike bank transfers, crypto transactions cannot be reversed.

How It Works — Step by Step

  1. Fake exchange/wallet: Professional-looking platform that accepts deposits but won't allow withdrawals
  2. Seed phrase theft: Scammer poses as support agent, asks for your 12/24-word recovery phrase
  3. Rug pull: Project launches token, developers hype it, then sell all holdings crashing price to zero
  4. Giveaway scam: Impersonating Elon Musk/Vitalik promising to 'double' sent crypto
  5. Pump and dump: Coordinated inflation of a token's value, then mass sell-off
  6. Fake crypto recovery services targeting previous scam victims

⚠️ Warning Signs

  • Guaranteed returns on crypto investment — impossible in volatile markets
  • Any exchange you've never heard of offering unusually high interest on deposits
  • Anyone asking for your seed phrase or private keys — EVER (even 'support')
  • Celebrity endorsement of unknown tokens
  • Inability to withdraw funds (withdrawal requires 'fee' or 'tax' payments first)
  • Pressure to invest quickly before 'opportunity closes'
  • Tokens found only on obscure DEXes with no verified audit

✅ How to Protect Yourself

  • Never share your seed phrase with anyone — legitimate companies will NEVER ask for it
  • Use only established, regulated exchanges (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance)
  • Verify smart contracts via independent auditors before investing
  • If a return sounds too good to be true, it's a scam
  • Use hardware wallets for significant crypto holdings
  • Check CoinMarketCap and do research before buying any token
